Because the mechanism of mac application, pevious versions of Microsoft Remote Desktop cannot be archived in Mac App Store. And the Remote Desktop 10 has ended supporting El Capitan, it is still suggested to find a way to upgrade the macOS to 10.12 or higher. It is possible to smoothly render remote 2k and 4k desktops using Remote Desktop on Windows, but the Mac version remains artificially low res. Worse than that though, doing the same tasks, Activity Monitor reports this new version uses 2-4x as much CPU as the previous version (with the square icon).

The upgrade of Microsoft Remote Desktop (MRD) from version 8 to version 10 also involves a change in delivery for many MacAdmins from the Mac App Store (MAS) to a standard package installer. Since a few extra considerations are involved I decided to share how I accomplished it using Munki. Read on if you are interested in the details.

All of these settings are available when setting up the initial connection to remotedesktop or virtuallab, or you can modify them later by clicking on the Edit icon on the saved connection icon after starting Remote Desktop Connection.


Display Settings

Click on the Display tab to access display settings. An important setting is the ‘Use All Monitor’ setting, if you are using multiple displays the default setting is to use all monitors available. I have found it to be better to use just one, but that is a matter of preference. Here is where you make the adjustment.

If you are using a modern Apple computer with a high-resolution Retina display, you may want to enable the option to Optimize for Retina displays to ensure the best viewing experience.


Devices & Audio


Click on the Devices & Audio tab and then use the checkboxes to tell the Remote Desktop client whether you want to share your local printers, smart cards, clipboard, and microphone with the remote Windows computer. If you share your printers, you can print from the Windows environment and have it use your local printer. If you share your clipboard, you can copy and paste text (but not files--see the next section for how to share files) between your Mac and the Windows computer. If you share your microphone, you can make it available to the Windows computer if you need it.


Folders

Version

To share a folder on your Mac with the Windows computer to enable file transfer between the systems, click on the Folders tab, then click the checkbox to Redirect folders, and then use the plus button to add folders for redirection. If you want to share an entire drive with the remote session, such as your Mac's hard drive or an attached USB flash drive, you can select the root of the drive when you are asked to browse for a folder.

Earlier this week, we received a call from a client stating that they could not longer connect to their Windows device at their office using their personal MacBook. The client was receiving an error message “Unable to Connect” with the error code 0x3000064. This error is related to the latest version of the Windows Remote Desktop application in macOS.

Issue:

Client using macOS based device receives error 0x3000064 when attempting a remote connection to a Windows 10 computer using the Microsoft Remote Desktop app. It is important to note that the client is using macOS Catalina (10.15.7) and that the remote connection uses a RD Gateway server.

Resolution:

Issue is caused by a faulty update on the Microsoft Remote Desktop app. To solve the issue, client must install a prior version of the Microsoft Remote Desktop app or install the Microsoft Remote Desktop Beta version 10.5.0 (1841).

Please note that some users using the latest macOS Big Sur (11.0.1) have noted that the Beta version of the app does not solve their issue. These users have downgraded to version 10.4.1 (1825) using the link below.
